Enzio in the barrique room
Piedmont has been mostly noted for the world-class, Nebbiolo-based Barolos and Barbarescos. These wines are produced in the southern part of the region by some of the most talented and visionary Italian winemakers. Lesser known, but just as notable are the Nebbiolo-based wines from Northern Piedmont, particularly in the area of Novara near the Vercelli hills.

One vineyard owner and winemaker that has stood above the others in Northern Piedmont - for its resources, vineyards, and visionary techniques - is Dessilani, owned and led by Enzio Lucca, a member of the nine-generation Dessilani family. Luca Maroni, the Robert Parker of Italy, has said about Dessilani: "Heartfelt congratulations to this leader, who is rapidly and surely restoring the spotlight to the Novara Region, which has an enormous yet to be realized potential."

Today, the Dessilani estate is divided into three primary sectors of winemaking; the vineyards located on the sloping hills along the Sesia river, the modern fermentation and storage section, and the aging section, featuring both the traditional large Slavonian oak casks and the 225 liter casks known as "barriques." These smaller barrels made of French and American oak are more and more in use as the principal factor in the international acceptance of the Dessilani wines.

With the physical resources of the Dessilani estate now in place and its image as the leader of the area an accepted fact, Enzio Lucca has developed a long range plan of promotion which includes the goal of developing the U.S. market to showcase his "Riserva" style wines and to introduce the world class products from his principal estates at Caramino and Lochera.
