Enacted July 12, 1963 as Denomination of Origin laws - three categories emerged:

  1. Vino da Tavola (V.D.T.)
  2. Denomination of Controlled Origin (D.O.C.)
  3. Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin (D.O.C.G.)

In 1992, the laws were updated to include a fourth category, I.G.T. or "Indicazione Geografica Tipica" - Typical Geographic Indication. I.G.T. falls between Vino da Tavola and D.O.C. The Italian Government introduced the I.G.T. category to upgrade many of the wines - (formerly about 85% of total wine production but eventually less than 40%) from simple Table Wine status to higher I.G.T. (equivalent of French Vin du Pays or German Landwein). Currently, there are over 100 I.G.T. areas.

To add impetus to the creation of more I.G.T. appellations (local governments or producers must request I.G.T. status just as they do for D.O.C. and D.O.C.G.), the updated laws now stipulate that the V.D.T. designation may not carry a varietal name or even a vintage date.
